Baseball All Star
Brett Butler knows the meaning of hard work, sacrifice and beating the odds. After reading a brief biography, you can read Brett's statements on:
2) Life in the womb, and
3) Living a virtuous life
Brett Butler holds the distinction of being one of the top 25 leadoff hitters in the history of professional baseball. Retiring at the end of the 1997 season, Brett's career stats included 2,375 hits, 558 stolen bases and a .290 lifetime batting average. Brett's autobiography "Field of Hope," is being made into a movie by Dick Clark Productions.
Even though he never started for his high school baseball team, Brett believed he was good enough to play professionally. His coaches told him he was too small and too short to play, but he proved them wrong and became a superstar in the big leagues.
Then, in 1996, after 16 years of playing professionally, he was diagnosed with cancer. "It's a shock, a total shock," Dodger General Manager Fred Claire said in an interview. "Brett is such an important part of our organization. He's very much an inspiration as a player and as a person. Brett is not just a member of the team; he's been a leader of the team. It's an emotional thing we're all going through."
Experts said he was never expected to play again, but Brett made an amazing comeback to play again with the Dodgers and he led them to many victories. In 1997, his final season, he hit .283 -- and in one game he went 5 for 5 against the New York Mets.
Brett's baseball career shows the great potential we all have for overcoming hurdles in life. Since retiring from baseball, Brett has become an inspiring speaker -- motivating people to strive for excellence in their lives. When it comes to the sanctity of sex and life, Brett had this to say:
Brett on Sex:
"Making love is a wonderful thing between a husband and wife in marriage. God promises that He will bless that relationship. The marriage relationship will not be as fulfilling if you don't abstain from sex before marriage. There is a danger of bringing emotional scars into marriage if you have sex in relationships prior to marriage."
Brett on Life in the womb:
"God has a plan for each and every one of our lives, including the lives of children in the womb."
Brett on virtuous living:
"If we walk in God's guidance and live a virtuous life, God promises that He will bless us."
